Springfield police say two men broke into a sleeping woman's house, tied her up, beat her and robbed her.

Kalen Barclay

Kalen Barclay, 18, and Shamar Smith, 20, have been charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and kidnapping after court documents say they terrorized a woman for her tax return money.

A probable cause statement says that around 10 p.m. on Feb. 15, operators received an open line 911 call from a woman who was crying while a male was heard yelling and cursing in the background.

When officers arrived at the residence on the 1800 block of East High Street in Springfield, a woman ran toward the front door with blood on her face yelling that someone had broken into her house, the statement says. As police stepped inside, they saw two men run out the back door.

The men — Barclay and Smith — ran through yards and jumped fences as police set up a perimeter, according to the statement.

Shamar Smith

Smith, was eventually detained with the help of a police K-9 unit, and Barclay was found hiding in the sunroom of a different house in the neighborhood, according to the statement. Barclay had $480 in cash, the statement says.

The woman told police she was asleep that night when she was pulled off the bed by intruders demanding money, according to the statement. One of the men used duct tape to bind the woman's hands and ankles before she told them she had some tax return money in her closet, the statement says.

The woman said the men then dragged her into the middle of a room and placed her in a chair, according to the statement. One of the men then struck the woman in the head with a glass ashtray and hit her on the arms and legs using a belt, the statement says.

The woman told police the man — believed to be Barclay — seemed like he was "enjoying beating her," according to the statement.

The two men then began rummaging through the house, according to the statement. At that time, the woman worked herself free of the duct tape, grabbed a phone, called 911 and set the phone under the couch, the statement says.

The men then tied the woman up again, this time binding her ankles to the chair — according to the statement — but the woman broke free just as police were arriving.

The woman told police her doors were locked that night, and police believe the men gained entry through a window before stealing money, a cell phone, a tablet and keys, according to the statement.

Smith told police he did not take part in duct taping the woman, and he said he told his friend not to hit her, according to the statement.

The woman told police she recognized Smith as someone she knew but she did not know Barclay, according to the statement. She told police she was afraid for her life during the incident.

Smith is being held in Greene County Jail on $150,000 bond.

Court documents say at the time of this incident, Barclay was on probation for a burglary charge out of Christian County. Barclay is being held in Greene County Jail on $200,000 bond.
