Fatal house fire on Morningside Street

A man died Monday morning in a south Springfield house fire.

Residents inside the home at 703 E. Morningside St. called 911 just after 11 a.m., the fire department said, and crews arrived to find heavy flames. The department said Monday evening that five adults and one child managed to escape; earlier in the day, the department had said it was three people.

The body of the man who died — who has yet to be identified — was found in the kitchen.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire from falling debris, the department said.

Fire marshals remained on the scene late Monday afternoon investigating the cause of the fire.
