Letters: NPLEx is a good tool in drug fight

Rep. Mike Moon, Jefferson City

Missouri has been on the front lines in the fight against meth and thankfully much progress has been made.

One of the reasons for the success has been the state’s implementation of the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) — a system that monitors pseudoephedrine purchase in 31 states across the country. Since implementing NPLEx in 2011, law enforcement and retailers have utilized the system to stop the illegal sale of pseudoephedrine and track those with suspicious purchase patterns.

In the first quarter of 2015, the system prevented the sale of 4,390 boxes of PSE, preventing 11,401 grams of PSE from potentially getting in the hands of criminals with the intent of making meth. Recently, local leaders in our part of the state attended a demonstration on how NPLEx works and is utilized in the fight against meth.

I applaud them for continuing to learn how NPLEx is used. Because of their commitment to stopping meth labs in the state, Missouri has made tremendous progress and our state is safer because of it.
