Mikey McKnight had owned his truck for 30 whole minutes when he pulled into the drive-thru of a Chinese restaurant. Hopefully, it was a good 30 minutes.

“It just started smoking while I was sitting there,” McKnight said. “I jumped out and got a fire extinguisher but it wasn’t enough.”

The fire ripped through the truck, which had been driven to the China Wok at 334 N. West Bypass, where it promptly caught fire.

McKnight called it “a total loss.”

The inner cab was completely melted, and exposed metal and wiring could be seen.

McKnight took the short life of his truck in stride, however, and joked with emergency personnel who were in disbelief about how long he’d had it.

Then, McKnight — a driver with RPM Recovery — hopped in a tow truck and loaded the shell of the truck onto the flatbed.

The tow truck made it out of the drive-thru lane without a singe — but, McKnight said, he never did get the food he ordered.
