A Springfield lawmaker proposed a law today that would require school bus stops in Missouri be located at least 500 feet from the residence of a registered sex offender.

“For the safety of our young people, and the peace of mind of families across the state, it’s imperative that we change state law to make it clear that school bus stops cannot be located near individuals who could do our children harm,” said Rep. Sonya Anderson, R-Springfield, in a news release.

Anderson said she filed the bill after a constituent told her that his children waited for their school bus in front of a home where a sex offender lived.

Under the proposed bill, if a school district could not find an alternative for a bus stop located next to a sex offender, school officials would be required to notify parents of the situation.
