A Nixa home was damaged in a Sunday morning fire that officials say was caused by a cigarette not being put out properly.

According to a news release from the Nixa Fire Protection District, one person was injured in the fire that started just after 8 a.m. on the 100 block of Deanna Lane in Nixa.

The release says when firefighters arrived they found heavy fire coming from the attached garage of the home. Crews from Nixa, Ozark, Battlefield and Logan-Rogersville were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes, and no firefighters were injured.

The family was able to evacuate the home safely, and one occupant was transported to the hospital with minor burns, the release says.

The home has fire damage throughout the garage and attic and won't be habitable, but many valuables have been salvaged, according to the release.

The Nixa Fire District reminds everyone to dispose of smoking materials in non-combustible containers filled with water or sand.
