Bicyclist dies after being hit by car in Springfield

A bicyclist died Sunday after he was hit by a car late Saturday night in Springfield, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department.

Darion L. Sands, 27, of Springfield died after he was hit by a car just before midnight near the intersection of Catalpa Street and Scenic Avenue, according to the release.

The release says Sands was traveling westbound on his bicycle when he was hit by a 2006 Ford Fusion that was traveling northbound on Scenic Avenue.

After the collision, Sands was thrown from the bike, and the Ford Fusion ran off the roadway and rolled over, according to the release.

The driver of the Ford Fusion, 24-year-old Donald Bailey, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, the release says.

Bailey and Sands were transported to a local hospital. Sands died just after 6 a.m. on Sunday, according to the release.

The release says Bailey suffered serious injuries.

Police say they are still investigating the crash.
