Police say the February death of a Springfield man who was stabbed is now being investigated as a homicide.

Neal Williams, 43, was stabbed in late January, but died more than a week later from complications following an operation, according to a press release from the Springfield Police Department.

The release said police responded to a stabbing at 1:34 a.m. on Jan. 28 at the 1000 block of S. Thelma Avenue, at which point Williams was taken to the hospital with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

On Feb. 5, WIlliams died from "adult respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock due to healthcare-associated pneumonia due to post-operative complications of a stab wound," the release said.

In April, his death was ruled a homicide by the Greene County Medical Examiner's Office, according to the release.

A suspect has been identified, the release said, and the investigation is ongoing.
