Police say a man is in custody and is being treated for "severe" injuries at a local hospital after a several hour standoff in which shots were fired at officers.

According to Lt. Eric Reece with Springfield police, officers were called to home in the 2400 block of West Mount Vernon around 5:20 p.m. Sunday after a woman called to say her husband was "feeling suicidal" and had fired a shot in the house.

Police set up a perimeter around the house and negotiated with the man over the phone, but the man started to fire shots inside the house and outside the house at officers, Reece said.

The standoff ended around 8 p.m. when the man shot himself and came out of the house. He was conscious but had suffered serious injuries.
