Man tried to abduct former boss at Springfield golf course, police say

A Springfield man was charged with three felonies after police say he threatened two people with a gun Monday at the Springfield Golf and Country Club.

Donald Weber, 56, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of attempted felonious restraint after police say he threw handcuffs at two men, pointed a gun at them and tried to force them into an office.

Court documents say Weber has been acting strangely over the last few months — talking about kidnapping children and eating people's brains.

One of the victims in this case — Weber's former boss — allegedly purchased a handgun for protection against Weber. Police say the victim brandished that gun during Monday's incident.

According to a probable cause statement, Weber — a former employee at the golf course — approached his old boss and another man at about 12:30 p.m. near the country club's maintenance building located on Valley Water Mill Road on the northeast edge of town.

Weber displayed a gun, threw two sets of handcuffs at the victims and told them to put the handcuffs on and enter the office, according to the statement.

The victims picked up the handcuffs, walked into the maintenance building and then took off running, the statement says.

One of the victims ran to his truck and retrieved a gun. There was then a brief standoff between Weber and the victim in which they yelled at one another before both victims ran from the scene, according to the statement.

More than a dozen police cars responded to the scene and officers detained the men who were involved.

Weber was taken to jail where he allegedly told a detective he was defending his "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness."

Weber is being held in the Greene County Jail on $45,000 bond. He does not have an attorney listed for this case.
