A man accused of killing four people in a Springfield motel room two years ago was found guilty this week on a federal gun charge.

Scott Goodwin-Bey

Scott Goodwin-Bey, 49, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm on Tuesday in a verdict handed down by U.S. District Judge Douglas Harpool, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

The release says Harpool presided over a one-day bench trial in this case in August.

Goodwin-Bey is also facing four first-degree murder charges in state court. He is scheduled to stand trial on the murder charges in January.

The release says Goodwin-Bey — who has previous convictions on gun and crack cocaine charges — walked into the Star Mart on West Chestnut Expressway in Springfield on Nov. 30, 2014 and set a gun on the counter before leaving.

The store manager called 911, and police arrested Goodwin-Bey in the area with ammunition on the floor of his vehicle, according to the release.

Springfield police say the gun Goodwin-Bey set on the counter that day is the same one he used to shoot and kill four people inside a room at the Economy Inn on North Glenstone Avenue on Nov. 15, 2014.

The motive, according to a probable cause statement filed in state court, is that Goodwin-Bey thought the four victims — Trevor Fantroy, 43, Lewis Green, 44, Danielle Keyes, 29, and Christopher Freeman, 24 — were informing police about his drug use.

The news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office says Goodwin-Bey faces up to 10 years in federal prison on the gun conviction. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

County prosecutors have said they will not seek the death penalty against Goodwin-Bey.
