A 6-year-old boy was playing with a gun early Wednesday morning when he accidentally shot his 7-year-old sister, according to a press release from the Greene County Sheriff's Office.

The release said the shooting took place just southwest of Springfield city limits in the 2400 block of West Alta Street.

According to the release, preliminary information suggests that the gun was unknowingly dropped by an adult guest at the residence.

The release said the 7-year-old girl was taken to a hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

“It is your responsibility to always maintain proper storage and handling of your guns. Do not leave them lying around when there are small children around. Teach your children proper safety with weapons and to always assume they are loaded.  This was a very unfortunate event, but we are so thankful the 7-year-old will survive," Sheriff Jim Arnott said in the release.
