Police say they are investigating a carjacking that occurred Sunday afternoon in Springfield.

Police investigate a stolen truck Sunday afternoon on Kansas Expressway in Springfield.

Sgt. Tonya Price with the Springfield Police Department said a man stole an occupied truck a little after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Kansas Expressway and Chestnut Expressway.

Price said the suspect hopped into the bed of the victim's truck while the victim was at a stoplight and busted out the back window of the truck.

The victim then complied with the suspect's demands to get out of the truck, Price said, and the suspect drove away in the truck.

A witness followed the suspect, according to Price, and relayed directions to authorities.

The suspect eventually drove the truck northbound in the southbound lanes of Kansas Expressway where he crashed into two other vehicles and the median near High Street, according to Price.

Price said the suspect then took off on foot, but a Greene County Sheriff's deputy happened to be in the area at the time and quickly detained the suspect until Springfield police arrived.

Price said no one was injured during the carjacking or the crashes.

The suspect was armed with some kind of object, possibly a pipe or a knife, when he jumped in the back of the pickup truck, according to Price.

One lane of southbound traffic on Kansas Expressway was blocked while police worked the scene.
