Grandfather's ashes among items stolen from Springfield home, police say

Police say a man broke into a Springfield home last month and stole several items, including a box containing the ashes of the victim's grandfather.

Carl A. Jackson, 32, was charged last week with first-degree burglary after police say he stole from a Springfield family and then sold their belongings.

According to a probable cause statement, Jackson and another man were riding their bicycles in the 2500 block of West Lincoln Street on the morning of April 25 when they came upon a house with no cars in the driveway.

The statement says the men broke into the house and rummaged around, gathering up items like a gun, electronics, clothing, jewelry and the ashes of the victim's deceased grandfather.

When one of the residents got home at about noon, the statement says, the suspects ran out of the house and fled the scene on their bicycles.

Police contacted Jackson later that day and he had a backpack full of stolen items from the Lincoln Street burglary, according to the statement.

Jackson allegedly told police he burglarized the home on Lincoln Street and then sold many of the stolen items.

As of last week, police had not recovered the stolen ashes.

Jackson is being held in the Greene County Jail on $50,000 bond. He does not have an attorney listed for this case.
